Raising Angelfish Fry from Eggs and Their growth stages
The eggs usually hatch within 48-60 hours. But can vary on the temperature your tank is at. the higher the temperature the quicker the hatching which isn't always a good thing. The baby angelfish fry usually start to swim around freely at 5-7 days also depending on temperature. The stage before free swimming is referred to as the "wigglers" stage. The Angelfish fry will start to develop anal and dorsal fins on or around day 11-13. Also usually around 3-4 weeks will take on the appearance and finally look like little angels.
The most important thing to remember in this phase of their life is food and water changes. Doing frequent water changes and supplying them with a good quality food is crucial if you want great growth and color from them. Not sure what food s are good quality check some out on Amazon.com. Their is a list of them for you their to select from, most being the best which is Omega One Food. You can crush these flakes up and feed to the baby fry.
When going to sell your fish it's important to understand the size chart that is used to describe angelfish. The size of coins is what is used. For example Dime, nickel, quarter, half dollar and large size. Usually the fry are ready to breed at 6-12 months of age depending on their tank conditions.
How To Tell The Genders of Angelfish
Tell the genders can tough. Some people think it's all about the hump on the head but I have seen males with no hump and females with a hump on their head.
The only sure fire way to tell the genders of angelfish are to buy them in a group of 6 or more and let them pair off naturally. Once they lay eggs you can see their egg duct and sperm duct. The top picture below is the female, the black bar if you follow it down the body you can see the egg duct sticking out it's much wider and larger than the males. The male is the bottom picture you can see a small rod sticking out from the body that tells you it is a male.
Sexing angelfish can be easy as long as you give it time and be patience.

Angelfish Breeding Tank Setup
The perfect Setup that I find works great is a 20 gallon high aquarium. This is great because it can house two adult angels and their fry just fine. Their are also some other things to consider putting in the tank like.
- Sponge Filter
- Heater
- Slate Rock
- Live plant with broad leaves.
The perfect set up is 0 nitrate, 0 nitrite and of course 0 ammonia. The tank should also be aged, the way I age my tank water is taking a hang on the back filter from another community tank and placing it on the breeding tank. This way all the beneficial bacteria go into the tank.
I heat the tank to 78-80F and turn on the sponge filter and let it sit about 3-5 days before adding the angelfish to the breeding tank.
This will be your angelfish breeding tank for your breeding angels.
